When is Tooth Extraction Needed?
Even though pediatric dentists Dr. Yvonne Felli and Dr. Ajikwaga Felli make every effort to save and preserve your child's natural teeth, there are instances where a tooth or teeth may have to be extracted. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible above the gumline. This is typically done when a tooth or teeth is so damaged or decayed that it cannot be repaired. A surgical extraction takes out a tooth that hasn't erupted over the gums. Surgical extractions are commonly done to remove impacted teeth, like the wisdom teeth, that don't have sufficient space to fit into the smile. Regardless of the reason for needing an extraction at Cuddly Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, our team will treat your child with the best treatment. Our Allen, TX office offers multiple sedation techniques, such as nitrous oxide, oral-conscious sedation, and IV sedation, so your child can remain calm and comfortable throughout his or her procedure. Get in touch with our staff to find out more or to schedule an examination and see how we can help your child enhance their oral health.

What Can I Expect from My Child's Tooth Extraction?
Extractions are performed in our Allen, TX office with local anesthesia. Other types of sedation could be used, depending on the extent of the extraction and if your child needs help staying relaxed. For a simple extraction, we will loosen the tooth using a special device known as an elevator prior to removing the tooth. A surgical extraction involves making incisions into the gums to reach the tooth. If needed, the tooth may be broken up into smaller pieces so that it can be removed. When the tooth has been removed, we will suture the incision in the gums. We may prescribe antibiotics that need to be taken prior to and after the process in case your child has a current infection, if his or her immune system is weak, if the procedure is lengthy, or if they have some other special medical condition. The recovery process will vary based on the extent of the tooth extraction; however, most children benefit from eating soft, cool food for the first few days following the extraction. We will speak with you regarding what is normal during your child's recovery and how to care for their gums, which will probably be swollen after the extraction. Besides any suggested follow-up visits, you should schedule regular appointments at Cuddly Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics for your child's dental cleanings and exams so we can monitor your child's health after an extraction.
